Karley Tiegs, a rural Washington native, has always dreamt of a career that would allow her to make an impact. Thanks to steady support from her parents, her high school counselor, and LaunchNW programs, she’s now a thriving freshman at Eastern Washington University, set to graduate with a dual endorsement in Elementary and Special Education.

Karley grew up south of Spokane and attended a high school of fewer than 200 students. While her school was small, her counselor ensured students were well-connected to opportunities. She was introduced to LaunchNW as an upperclassman and, as a senior, she participated in Mpower Mentoring, supporting a freshman’s transition to high school.

“I was there to smile at them in the hallways and was able to form a friendship I wouldn’t have had without the program,” says Karley.

As she neared graduation, Karley’s parents encouraged college as a way to continue growing intellectually and build a network that would shape her future career. She chose to attend EWU and received the LaunchNW Promise Scholarship, making higher education less of a financial strain.

Reflecting on her years of nannying and serving in children’s ministry at her church, Karley decided a career in teaching would be the perfect way to make a difference in the lives of others.

“When I work with kids, they just warm my heart. I wanted a career that could make an impact on students and support them, especially kids who don’t have the best home life.”

Transitioning to college from a small-town high school was initially overwhelming for Karley, but LaunchNW’s EWU College Navigator, Julie-Ann Pearson, has worked alongside her to overcome obstacles and inspire confidence.

As Karley’s freshman year draws to a close, she’s thankful for the guidance and support she’s received throughout her journey. Someday soon, she looks forward to paying it forward by helping the next generation of students succeed.
